Overview Introduction Jeev 5mcg Vaccine is a medicine used for prevention of Japanese encephalitis (JE). It protects against JE and is given as part of universal immunization program for selected places endemic to JE. Your doctor will decide if you should receive Jeev 5mcg Vaccine based on your situation. It is given as a subcutaneous injection. The first dose of Jeev 5mcg Vaccine is generally given at 9 to 12 months of age and the second dose at 16 to 24 months of age. The vaccine is recommended for people moving to a Japanese encephalitis (JE)-endemic country, travelers who plan to stay for more than 1 month in JE-endemic areas, and frequent travelers to JE-endemic areas. This vaccine should also be considered for shorter-term (less than 1 month) travelers with an increased risk of JE. Common side effects of this medicine include injection site reactions (such as soreness, swelling, pain, or redness), headache, fever, muscle pain, nausea, and fatigue. Before receiving the vaccine, you should let your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to a vaccine. Also tell your doctor if you have any problems with your heart, kidneys, or liver. Some other medicines may react with this vaccine, let your doctor know of all the medication you are taking. Pregnant or breastfeeding should consult their doctors first before receiving this vaccine. Uses of Jeev Injection Prevention of Japanese Encephalitis Side effects of Jeev Injection Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them Common side effects of Jeev Fatigue Fever Headache Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness) Muscle pain Nausea How to cope with side effects? The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist. Coping with Headache Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Rest in a quiet, dimly lit room. Do not sleep more than you normally would. Do not strain your eyes (for example by looking at a screen). Do not drink alcohol. Headaches are usually temporary and usually go away with time. But, if they last longer or get worse, ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller. Coping with Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness) Try to change the area of injection and the exact site of injection each time. Apply a cold compress to the injection site. These symptoms are usually mild and should only last a few hours. You can ask your doctor to recommend a medicine if it is bothering you. Coping with Muscle pain Tell your doctor straight away because sometimes the muscle pain may be a sign of something more serious. A lower dosage or a different medication might be needed. Try to relax the cramping muscle by stretching it and holding the stretch. You might massage the muscle or apply a heat pad to the area after stretching. Avoid exercising too much. Stay well-hydrated. Do not take over-the-counter pain relievers unless the doctor prescribes it. Your doctor may also suggest taking supplements, such as calcium, magnesium oxide or potassium oxide depending on your needs. Coping with Nausea You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop from feeling sick.
