Overview Introduction Celovan 500mg Injection is an antibiotic used in the treatment of severe bacterial infections in hospitalized patients. It is effective against infections of the respiratory tract (e.g. pneumonia), urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, bones and joints, heart, blood and others. Celovan 500mg Injection is also used for the prevention of infection in some high-risk patients undergoing surgical procedures. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria and is useful for treating adults as well as children. It is a narrow-spectrum antibiotic that only covers the gram-positive type of bacteria. This medicine is administered slowly by a drip (infusion) into a vein, under the supervision of a healthcare professional. A rapid infusion can lead to reactions such as low blood pressure, wheezing, shortness of breath or itching. It may also be combined with other antibiotics to treat additional types of bacteria. Some people may develop local injection site reactions like pain, swelling, and redness. However, these are usually minor and temporary. Other side effects like wheezing, kidney (renal) injury, shortness of breath, flushing (sense of warmth in the face, ears, neck, and trunk) and decreased blood pressure may be seen occasionally. Inform your doctor if you have a history of an allergic reaction to this medication in the past. Your doctor may regularly monitor your kidney function and your hearing while you are taking this medicine. Some people may be advised blood tests to check the level of this medicine in their blood. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before taking this medicine. Uses of Celovan Injection Severe bacterial infections Side effects of Celovan Injection Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them Common side effects of Celovan Breathlessness Decreased blood pressure Wheezing Renal injury Flushing (sense of warmth in the face, ears, neck and trunk) How to cope with side effects? The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist. Coping with Breathlessness Control your breaths by breathing in slowly through your nose and breathing out through your mouth. Sitting on a chair and leaning your chest slightly forward may also help. Increase the flow of air around you by opening windows or using a fan. Try to learn breathing techniques and do regular physical exercise. Wearing loose clothing around your waist and chest may also be helpful. Your breathing will usually return to normal within a few weeks of starting the medicine. Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or get worse. Shortness of breath can also be a sign of an ongoing or worsening heart problem. Coping with Decreased blood pressure Get up slowly from a sitting or lying position. Try to avoid changing positions suddenly even in general. Try crossing your legs when you are sitting and wearing compression stockings. Drink plenty of water and try eating smaller, more frequent meals. Although salt is not good for everyone (and bad for some people), if you have low blood pressure increasing your intake of salt (sodium) can raise your blood pressure. Cut down the amount of alcohol you drink. If your blood pressure becomes very low, you should talk to your doctor. Coping with Flushing (sense of warmth in the face, ears, neck and trunk) Sip cold or iced drinks. Try cutting down on coffee, tea and alcohol. It might help to keep the room cool and use a fan. You could also spray cool water on your face. Wear layers of light clothing that you can easily take off if you overheat. Breathe deeply and try to relax. Have a lukewarm shower or bath instead of a hot one. Avoid smoking and cut down on alcohol. The flushing should go away after a few days. If it does not go away or causes problems, contact your doctor.
